It is the classic Pamukkale dilemma. You have seen the photos of the glowing white terraces and the legendary thermal pools, and you are ready to pack your swimsuit. But when you look at the map, you realize there are two very different places involving water: the natural white travertines and the Antique Cleopatra Pool.
So, which one is better? Do you really need to pay extra to swim?
Let’s clear up the confusion. With the Antique Pool officially reopening its doors after a massive year-long restoration project, there has never been a better time to discuss how water works in Hierapolis. Here is the honest, ground-level truth about getting wet in Pamukkale.
The Travertines: Beautiful Wading, Not Swimming
Let’s start with the biggest misconception travelers have when they arrive. When you look at Instagram, it seems like people are doing Olympic laps in the white pools. The reality is quite different.
You cannot actually “swim” in the natural travertines.
The areas open to the public are specifically designated to protect the delicate limestone. What you are actually doing is wading through ankle-to-knee-deep thermal water.
The Experience: You must take off your shoes and socks (this is strictly enforced by guards with whistles to keep the white stone pristine). You will walk barefoot down the gentle slopes, feeling the chalky, mineral-rich mud squish between your toes. It is an incredibly unique, highly photogenic experience.
The Cost: Walking in the designated travertine pools is completely free. It is included in your main Hierapolis entrance ticket.
It is an absolute must-do for the photos and the feeling of the natural clay, but if you are looking to submerge yourself and relax, the travertines will leave you wanting more.
The Cleopatra Antique Pool: The Premium Thermal Spa
If you actually want to swim, float, and relax your muscles after walking around ancient ruins, the Antique Pool is where you need to be.
And we have great news: After being closed for an entire year for a major, careful restoration, the pool is finally back open. The facilities have been refreshed, the water flow optimized, and the entire area feels renewed.
This isn’t a normal concrete hotel pool. You are swimming in naturally warm (around 36°C or 97°F) mineral water that feels like champagne, thanks to the natural micro-bubbles. Even better, an earthquake in the 7th century toppled the surrounding Roman temple right into the water. So, you are literally swimming over and sitting on 2,000-year-old marble columns.
The Rules and The Pricing:
Because this is a specialized facility inside the ancient city, it operates on a separate system from the main gate.
To Look: If you just want to take photos, sit at the café under the pine trees, or watch your family swim, you can enter the pool complex area for free.
To Swim: If you want to get into the water, you must purchase a separate ticket at the turnstiles inside the complex. Currently, the swimming fee is 600 TL for adults and 300 TL for children.
What it Includes: That fee gives you access to the thermal water, lockers to store your valuables, and changing cabins with showers. You need to bring your own towel, or you can buy a basic one at the gift shop.
The Reality of the Crowds (And How We Beat Them)
Here is the part most guidebooks will not tell you. Because the Cleopatra Pool is famous, it can get heavily congested. By 1:00 PM, when the massive 50-seater tour buses arrive from the coastal resorts, the pool can look like a crowded bathtub.
This is where having a logistical partner changes your entire day.
At Puerto Travel, we refuse to let our guests be swallowed by the crowds. Because you are traveling in a private Mercedes Vito or Sprinter, we control the clock. We use our ground-level knowledge to time your visit perfectly. We either get you to the Antique Pool right when the gates open so you can have the Roman columns almost to yourself, or we time it for the late afternoon when the large groups have gone back to their buses.
So, Which One Do You Choose?
You don’t have to choose—you just have to know what to expect.
Take off your shoes, roll up your pants, and walk down the white travertines to get those iconic photos and feel the mineral mud. Then, dry your feet, head over to the newly restored Antique Pool, pay the entrance fee, and treat yourself to a true, full-body thermal soak over ancient ruins.
