Biblical Nicaea & Iznik Tour from Istanbul
- We will pick you up from your Istanbul hotel early in the morning and drive to Iznik. As we cross the bridge towards Bithynia, your expert guide will provide an introduction to early Church history and the significance of the Council of Nicaea.
- We arrive at Lake Iznik (Ascanius). According to tradition and recent archaeological findings, the First Council of Nicaea (325 AD)—which established the divinity of Christ and the date of Easter—was held at the Senate Palace near the lake. We will visit the area to discuss the historic “Nicene Creed” at its origin.
- We will also view the newly discovered Sunken Basilica (dedicated to St. Neophytos) from the shore, a poignant symbol of the city’s lost Christian grandeur.
- We will continue to the heart of the walled city to visit the Church of Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom). Built by Justinian I, this sacred structure is of immense theological importance as the site of the Second Council of Nicaea in 787 AD. Here, standing on the opus sectile floors where bishops once debated, your guide will explain the historic end to the first period of Iconoclasm and the restoration of icon veneration.
- We will take a relaxing break for a traditional lunch at a lakeside restaurant, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of Lake Ascanius that has witnessed centuries of history.
- After lunch, we explore the formidable Roman city walls that once protected Nicaea during the Crusades and the period of the Empire of Nicaea.
- We will walk through the magnificent Lefke Gate, the best-preserved entrance to the city, featuring ancient Greek inscriptions and a nearby Roman aqueduct. Standing here, you can imagine the arrival of emperors and bishops during the height of the Byzantine era.
- We will make a brief visit to a traditional Iznik tile workshop. You will observe the creation of the world-famous quartz ceramics, an art form that decorated not only the great mosques but also late-period churches and icons throughout history.
- At the end of the tour, we will drive you back to your hotel in Istanbul.
