Itinerary

Soaring through the skies and emerging from antiquity is Pergamon, which was once a mighty city of the Hellenistic period and the homeland of the Attalids. Nature endowed Pergamon with all that is worthy of emulation: Money, culture, and quite advanced scientific thought-for it had a library almost rivaling Alexandria, for it saw the birth of parchments, and the Asklepeion, one of the earliest European medical centers, set up by Galen, where healing was also carried forth using the powers of music, water, and dreams. The city had temples bigger than ever to honor the greatness of Athena and Zeus, hence the identity of its Temple of Zeus in Berlin’s Pergamon Museum. Pergamon is now deep in Christian significance, being mentioned in the Book of Revelation as one of the Seven Churches and referred to as the abode of “Satan’s throne.” The ruins today, located in modern Turkey, speak about a city sculpted by the Anatolian, Greek, Roman, and Ottoman cultures and offering the visitor an unforgettable journey through layers of history, faith, and culture.
