Didyma (Didim), merely an hour’s drive from Aydin, emerges as a fascinating destination that transcends the typical summer resort vibe. The Temple of Apollo’s foundations were laid in the 8th century BC, with its operations overseen by the Brahchidae family, who traced their lineage to the mythical Branchos and were renowned for the precision of their oracular insights. Yet, in 494 BC, Persian forces demolished the temple as retribution against the rebellious Ionians.
Alexander the Great’s victories led to the temple’s reconstruction on a grand scale around 300 BC, spearheaded by Seleucus, one of Alexander’s generals. This ambitious project envisioned a temple grander than its original, incorporating numerous auxiliary buildings, though it remained unfinished due to the rise of Christianity, which condemned oracular practices, leading to the temple’s decline in prominence.

Although many of these statues have been relocated to the British Museum, the site still houses several, including the iconic petrifying Medusa Head, symbolizing Didyma’s enduring legacy.
