Fethiye, a modern town with deep historical roots, is built upon the ancient city of Telmessos. The remnants of this renowned ancient city are still visible within Fethiye, offering a glimpse into a past that stretches back to the 5th century BC. Initially, Telmessos thrived as an independent city-state before falling under the sway of the Persian Empire in 547 BC, under whose rule it flourished significantly.

Details about the Byzantine period are scarce, but it’s known that the town faced hardships during the Arab-Byzantine Wars, leading to its near abandonment. The city saw fortifications in the 8th century, and by the 10th century, it was known as Makri (or Makre), leaving its ancient name behind. The 12th and 13th centuries marked a period of renewed prosperity for Makri, with the expansion of its city walls and recognition as a hub for perfume production and trade.

In the early 13th century, the city came under Turkish rule, and by 1424, it was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire. A significant Greek population, which returned to Greece following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, once inhabited Fethiye. The city was later renamed in honor of Fethi Bey, a pioneering pilot of the Ottoman air force.

Today, Fethiye is celebrated for its tourist attractions, including the beautiful Ölüdeniz, the historical village of Kayaköy, the serene Kabak Bay, the luxurious Göcek, and the ancient Lycian tombs. These sites make Fethiye a captivating destination that bridges ancient history with natural beauty.
