The name of Antalya derives from its founder, King Attalos II of Pergamon. It is believed that around 150 BC, King Attalos II established the city, initially naming it Attalia, to serve as a naval base for his fleet. Following his death, the city was absorbed into the Roman Empire, during which Antalya flourished significantly. It remained a major city throughout the Byzantine period. Subsequently, the city came under the dominion of the Seljuk Turks and later became the capital of the Teke Beylik. By 1423, Antalya had been integrated into the Ottoman Empire. In contemporary times, Antalya is a vibrant city and the capital of Turkish tourism. Besides tourism, the economy of Antalya is bolstered by agriculture, commerce, and light industry.
